Vrbnik, undoubtedly, is one of the most renowned Croatian locations. This is owed to its Glagolitic heritage and the famous folk song with a distinctive melody and content, interpreted and arranged in numerous variations under the title "Vrbniče nad morem." Like other ancient castles on the island, Vrbnik is perched high, almost 50 meters above sea level, in a truly unique position on a rock that literally plunges into the sea. Alongside Šilo in the Dobrinj region, it is the only larger settlement on the eastern coast of the island of Krk. Its first mention dates back to the year 1100. The inhabitants were primarily engaged in agriculture, with less focus on maritime activities and fishing. Today, the most famous product of Vrbnik and Vrbnik Field is the golden-yellow wine - Žlahtina, which has gained fame on a broader Croatian scale. According to the tales of older locals, before the wine gained its reputation, the fields were cultivated with cereals to feed families with more members than today. In those conditions, vines were grown on the edges of the fields because there was no market, and wine was produced only for personal needs.

With its rich history, Vrbnik is referred to as the cradle of literacy among Croats and is undoubtedly one of the oldest places on the island of Krk. Narrow alleyways dominate Vrbnik, so it's no surprise that the narrowest street in the world is right here.
